Few western musical repertories speak more to the imagination than the Requiem mass for the dead. 'The Book of Requiems' presents in-depth essays on the most important works in this tradition, from the origins of the genre up to the present day. Each chapter is devoted to a specific Requiem, and offers both historical information and a detailed work-discussion. Conceived as a multi-volume essay collection by leading experts, 'The Book of Requiems' is an authoritative reference publication intended as a first port of call for musicologists, music theorists, and performers both professional and student. 0Volume I treats the Requiem?s liturgical and chant background, the craft of early Requiem composition, and eight of the earliest composed Requiems, from c. 1450 to c. 1550.

A fresh consideration of the images of saints and martyrs Rubens created for the churches of Flanders and the Holy Roman Empire that offers a masterly demonstration of Rubens' achievements, liberating their message from the secular misunderstandings of the post-religious age and showing them in their intended light.

Catholic Europe, 1592-1648' examines the processes of Catholic renewal from a unique perspective; rather than concentrating on the much studied heartlands of Catholic Europe, it focuses primarily on a series of societies on the European periphery and examines how Catholicism adapted to very different conditions in areas such as Ireland, Britain, the Netherlands, East-Central Europe, and the Balkans. In certain of these societies, such as Austria and Bohemia, the Catholic Reformation advanced alongside very rigorous processes of state coercion. In other Habsburg territories, most notably Royal Hungary, and in Poland, Catholic monarchs were forced to deploy less confrontational methods, which nevertheless enjoyed significant measures of success. On the Western fringe of the continent, Catholic renewal recorded its greatest advances in Ireland but even in the Netherlands it maintained a significant body of adherents, despite considerable state hostility.

Multifaceted and in-depth analysis of theneo-scholastic movement In his encyclical AeterniPatris (1879), Pope Leo XIII expressed the conviction that the renewedstudy of the philosophical legacy of Saint Thomas Aquinas would help Catholicsto engage in a dialogue with secular modernity while maintaining respect forChurch doctrine and tradition. As a result, the neo-scholastic frameworkdominated Catholic intellectual production for nearly a century thereafter. This volume assesses the societal impact of theThomist revival movement, with particular attention to the juridicaldimension of this epistemic community. Contributions from differentdisciplinary backgrounds offer a multifaceted and in-depth analysis of manydifferent networks and protagonists of the neo-scholastic movement, itsinstitutions and periodicals, and its conceptual frameworks. Although specialattention is paid to the Leuven Institute of Philosophy and Faculty of Law, thevolume also discloses the neo-Thomist revival in other national andtransnational contexts. By highlighting diverse aspects of its societal andlegal impact, Neo-Thomism in Action argues that neo-scholasticism wasneither a sterile intellectual exercise nor a monolithic movement. The bookexpands our understanding of how Catholic intellectual discourse communitieswere constructed and how they pervaded law and society during the late19th century and the first half of the 20th century.

Religious controversy was central to political conflict in the years before the English Civil War. Where earlier historians have focused more narrowly on the doctrine of predestination, Dr Milton analyses the broader attitudes which underlay notions of religious orthodoxy. Through the first comprehensive analysis of how contemporaries viewed the Roman and foreign Reformed churches in the early Stuart period, Milton demonstrates the way in which an author's choice of a particular style of religious discourse could be used either to mediate or to provoke religious conflict. This study challenges many current historical orthodoxies. It identifies the theological novelty of Laudianism, but also exposes areas of ideological tension within the Jacobean Church. Its wide-ranging conclusions will be of vital concern to students of early Stuart religion and the origins of the English Civil War.
